Common Washing Machine Problems

Your washing machine does a lot for your household, to say the least. It saves your favorite shirt from coffee stains, keeps your favorite sweater soft and makes everything smell so good.

It’s a real issue, then, when things start to go wrong with it. At BL3 Inc., appliances that are connected to the plumbing system are our area of expertise.

Here are three of the most common washing machine problems and how to fix them.

1. It Smells

Washing machines are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria. Think about it—it’s their job to get rid of those things from your clothes.

However, it’s very common for washers, especially front-load washers, to hold in some of those things, causing your washer to start to smell. It might even get so bad it gets onto your clothes.

The easiest way to handle the issue is to run your washer on the hot or antibacterial setting with the detergent of your choice only. Then, open the lid to make sure it dries out completely.

The best way to prevent this from happening again is to clean your washer monthly. You can get cleaning pods made specifically for this purpose or do regular hot water washes.

You also can make sure to leave the lid/door open to the washer after every wash. This will allow any leftover water to evaporate, protecting your washer from the possible growth of mildew, mold or fungus.

2. It’s “Dancing”

You’ve just put a load of towels into your washer, and a few minutes later, it starts shaking. Maybe it’s moving back and forth or just rattling around, but it’s enough to move it slightly out of its position.

We call this “dancing,” and it’s a very common washer issue, especially if one is doing regular heavy loads of laundry such as sheets, blankets or towels.

There are two main reasons why your washer is doing this that we often see:

  • The load is unbalanced: This is the most common problem when it comes to your washer moving and shaking. You’ll want to make sure you don’t overload your washer, especially if it’s blankets, towels or sheets. Try to fill your washer up to the ¾ mark. This will allow a large load but will keep your washer from becoming unbalanced during the spinning part of the cleaning cycle.

  • It’s on an uneven surface: If the floors in your home tilt a certain way or aren’t even, this can cause your washer to jump around during the spin cycle. It’s easy to fix. Simply get a piece of plywood from your local hardware store and position under the part of the washer that isn’t level.

3. Clothes Aren’t Dry After Final Spin

There’s nothing more annoying than opening the washer door and finding your clothes aren’t dry all the way. This could happen for many reasons, and it is something you may be able to fix on your own.

You’ll first want to check to see if your drain hose has been kinked from your washer “dancing.” If you can remove the kink, this should allow your water to drain correctly. You’ll just have to run another spin cycle.

You also can clean the inside of the hose. If there is lint or some other object in the hose, this can cause the washer not to drain properly as well.
